Who We Are

Artistic Director | Valerio Vicari

Valerio Vicari has been Artistic Director of the Association of the Roma Tre Orchestra since its establishment in January of 2005, and was one of the founding members of the association.

He has been President of the commissione Musica fondo PSMSAD di INPS since December 2022.

During the 2023 year he was a member of the commission of Festivals, Choirs, and Bands of the Ministero della Cultura (Cultural Ministry). 

He was born in Rome, and in 2003 he graduated with a degree in Humanities from Roma Tre University with a thesis in "Philology and Dantean Critique", with a ranking of 110/110 and honors. In 2010 he earned a graduate degree in Public Administration with an emphasis in "the science of administration" from the Academy of Political Sciences of Roma Tre Orchestra with a thesis in "Italian Political System", with a rank of 110/110 and mention of honors. 

 
He graduated high school in 1999, with a specialization in classics, from Liceo Giulio Cesare (Julius Caesar High School) with a ranking of 100/100.
 
Because of his scholastic merits (both in high school and college), he received scholarships that involved participation in summer programs organized by:   
 
Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (selected from the 64 best high school students in all of Italy in 1998); 
Fondazione Collegio S. Carlo di Modena; 
and the Philosophy Department of Roma Tre University. 
 
He studied experimental composition and piano from 2001 to 2007 at the Santa Cecilia Music Conservatory with the Maestros Gian Paolo Chiti and Matteo D'Amico. 
 
In 2001 he created Roma Tre Orchestra, which since 2005 has been a legally recognized Association. 
 
He participates actively in the political and cultural activities of the most important associations in categories such as Aiam, Cidim, and Agis Lazio. 
 
He coordinates the work of the Musical Language Workshop at Roma Tre University, which has been active since the 2010-2011 academic year. 
 
Between 2004 and 2016 he held several positions in the Lazio Regional Counsel, such as registrar of the counsel group, registrar of the Schools and Universities committee, deputy registrar of the family policies and equal rights committee, and officer of the support structure of the conference of the presidents of the counsel groups. 
 
Since 2006, he has been an employee of Roma Tre University, where from 2008-2010 he held the position of registrar of the Academic Board of Communication Sciences. 
 
From 2000-2005 he was the musical consultant of the Luigi Settembrini middle school, where he held lessons on opera. 
  
From 2005-2006 he taught Latin at the Gabriele D'Annunzio high school in Rome. 
  
He received an Advanced Certificate in English from Cambridge University. 
 
He has also compiled some volumes of medieval literature in English, as part of the Encyclopedia of Italian Literary Studies published in 2006 by the US publishing house Routledge.

The Artistic Director is at the head of all the artistic, administrative, and cultural activities of the Association. It is a five year position, which is renewable and also compatible with all other offices except the President of the Association. The Artistic Director specifically:

- is responsible for the musical success of all concerts and other activities promoted and/or organized by the Association;

- is responsible for choosing the musicians and the pieces programmed by the orchestra;

- determines, in accordance with the Board of Directors, the salaries of all artistic, technical, and administrative employees involved in the activities of the Association and coordinates all the organization and management of employees and work relationships;

- if a member of the Board of Directors, can be the legal representative of the Association upon specific delegation from the President, who will determine the format and limits thereof;

- manages the implementation of plans, programs, and general directives defined by the Board of Directors;

- can nominate, after an agreement with the Board of Directors, a deputy director and assign them specific assignments and responsibilities.

Every action of the Artistic Director must be confirmed by the President of the Association, because they are the liaison between the Association and third parties. 

If the Artistic Director is not a member of the Board of Directors, they may still participate, without right to vote, in the meetings of the Members and of the Board of Directors.
